The Kentucky Derby, a “crown jewel” of American horse racing’s Triple Crown – Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes – is the first leg of the horse racing series.

Big Brown Win (2008)

For over 125 years, this  “Run for the Roses” tradition – hats, The Infield, “My Old Kentucky Home” – showcases the best of three-year old thoroughbred horses in a stakes race held annually, at Churchill Downs, on the first Saturday in May.

The Kentucky Derby currently covers one and one-quarter miles (2.012 km) , with colts and geldings carrying 126 pounds (57 kg) and fillies 121 pounds (55 kg); the race is coined “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports” for its approximate time length.

True socialites and horse owners can be found in private boxes…of course.
