141st Belmont Stakes

9 12 2008

6 June 2009

The Belmont Stakes, a “crown jewel” of American horse racing’s Triple Crown – Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont Stakes – is the third and last leg of this horse racing series held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York.

Betbelmont.com

Due to the one mile length of Belmont Park’s main track, this race is called the “Test of the Champion”; most 3 year old throughbreds are unaccustomed to the distance, lack  experience, and possibly the stamina to maintain a winning speed for long period on this course. The race is 1.5-miles (2.4 km) for 3 year-old colts and geldings carrying 126 pounds (57 kg) , and fillies carrying 121 pounds (55 kg).

The Belmont Stakes, called the “Run for the Carnations”, has rich tradition dating back to 1866; contemporary traditions include, the winner’s blanket of white carnations, post-parade songs “Sidewalks of New York” and theTheme from “New York, New York” as well as the Belmont Stakes Festival.
